  • My little mouse

When we moved into this apartment, we knew pretty quickly that we had to deal with some roaches that had moved in between tenants (yuck!). That was AWESOME, let me tell you - seeing roaches dart across the floor at random times, finding dead ones everywhere once the bug guy finally came... Lately, however, I've had a new pest in my life. I've been finding little black pellets on our floor near the front door. They look like chocolate sprinkles, only bigger. Guess who?!?

I looked outside this morning, and on our stoop I found a multitude of the pellets. Relieved that the animal, which I assumed was a mouse, was not living inside our house, I started to wonder what kind of stupid mouse would decide to come to our front stoop to poop and run. Now, I know cats have certain spots where they do their business, but mice - well, this was a new revelation to me. And then, I looked a little further out the door and had yet another revelation - my "mouse" was actually our door mat.

Here's a picture of the door mat, compete with a few of the little pellets that fell off of it. Go figure. At least it's not a mouse!!!

  • New Year's Resolutions: accomplished! (sort of)

My new year's resolution this year was to finally update my last name on all of my accounts. Yes, I have waited 3 1/2 years to update my name on certain credit cards, etc. In my defense, I haven't used them at all. I did update my name on the accounts I use more frequently... I guess I just didn't have the motivation for the others. :) At any rate, I think I've taken care of just about everything - with one small catch. I mailed one of the letters without a stamp . Oops! Here's hoping that one makes it safely back to my box so I can stamp it and send it on.

  • Big family get-together

Saturday was our big family get-together; believe it or not, the picture below is of my parents, the six siblings, two husbands, and Brenna (my niece). My dad took the picture. Family gatherings are always a lot of fun. Crazy, but fun!

  • Surgery!

I spent yesterday morning observing surgery at JCMC. It was quite an experience! The first surgery I saw was an incision and drainage, which is not a major surgery, but the second surgery was somewhat more intricate. It involved the insertion of plates and screws into a fractured ankle. This might sound cheesy, but there is something very special and mystical - and a little scary - about being six feet away from an open, exposed ankle. The surgeon scanned the ankle several times to check the placement of the hardware, and it ended up looking something like this:

Crazy, right? Also crazy: one of the major tools used to do this looked a lot like one of my husband's drills.

I'm not sure that the OR is the place for me. It is very different from any other area of nursing care that I've seen so far, and it seems like a very complex (but fun) field. I don't think that it is something that I feel passtionate about. I DO think that I won't be eating meat for a few days! PETA should be proud.
